Indication:
- Xarelto is an anticoagulant medication used to prevent blood clots and to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). It's also used in people with atrial fibrillation (a heart rhythm disorder) to lower the risk of stroke caused by a blood clot.
Side Effects:
- Common side effects include bleeding complications, including serious bleeding events. Other possible side effects may include muscle pain, itchiness, pain in arms or legs, and muscle spasms.
- Less common but more serious side effects include severe bleeding, liver function abnormalities, and allergic reactions.
- It’s important to seek medical attention immediately if you experience any signs of serious bleeding, such as unusual bruising, coughing up blood, severe headache, dizziness, or weakness.
Doses Available:
- Xarelto is available in tablet form in the following strengths: 2.5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, and 20 mg.
How to Take:
- The dosage depends on the specific condition being treated and the patient's kidney function.
- For most indications, the typical starting dose is higher (such as 15 mg twice daily) for the first few weeks, followed by a lower maintenance dose (such as 20 mg once daily).
- Xarelto can be taken with or without food, but the 15 mg and 20 mg tablets should be taken with food.
- Consistency in the timing of the medication each day is important for maintaining its effectiveness.
- Do not stop taking Xarelto without consulting your healthcare provider, as this may increase the risk of blood clots.
Additional Information:
- Avoid activities that have a high risk of causing injury or bleeding.
- Inform healthcare providers about taking Xarelto before any medical or dental procedures.
- Alcohol may increase the risk of bleeding and should be consumed in moderation.
- Inform your healthcare provider about all other medications you are taking, as Xarelto can interact with other drugs.
